Sylvia Atkins

The founder and Senior Partner of our Firm, Sylvia D. Atkins handles family law cases ranging from premarital and marital property agreements, divorce and post-divorce litigation, child custody determinations, modifications of child custody orders, paternity cases and adoptions.

Ms. Atkins has been named a Super Lawyer in the area of Family Law by Texas Monthly magazine from 2005 to the present.

She has received a favorable Peer Review Rating from her peers as measured by Martindale Hubbell.

Ms. Atkins received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Baylor University, and her Juris Doctor degree from Southern Methodist School of Law in 1991.

She was admitted to the Texas State Bar in 1991. She is also admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court, Northern and Western Districts.

Ms. Atkins was a litigation associate with Jackson Walker, L.L.P. Dallas, Texas, before opening her family law practice in Dallas and surrounding counties.

Ms. Atkins believes that the interests of divorcing parties and their children are best served when the parties can work together to reach amicable agreements concerning such issues as the rights and duties of parents, and the periods of time the child will spend with each parent following divorce.

She is a trained mediator, and is also trained in and practices using the Collaborative Law model for resolving disputes.

Ms. Atkins has lectured on the Texas alimony statute, tax consequences of divorce, and the importance of marital property agreements in estate planning.

She is a member of the Family Law Section of the American Bar Association, and the Family Law sections of both the State Bar of Texas and the Dallas County Bar Association; the College of the State Bar of Texas; the Texas Family Law Foundation; and she is a Life Fellow of the American Bar Foundation.
